If you are a constant internet user in Nigeria, you already have come across the menu that present you the option to choose whether you’d like to auto renew a data plan purchase or stick to a one-off purchase.

The auto-new option is great if you want uninterrupted data connection because the system automatically purchases the same data bundle for you again after the current one expires.

Th one-off option means the data bundle will not renew, and you will have to manually purchase it again after it expires.

In this guide, I’ll show you exactly how you can disable the auto renew option manually for your data subscriptions.

Why Cancel Data Renewal for MTN?

Disabling autorenewal for your data purchase can help you to control overspending on data purchase and also avoid unwanted renewals during periods that you don’t need data connection.

Personally, I prefer to manually auto renew my data plans to remain in control. I want to always have the liberty to switch to other networks when one is having connection issues.

Here are some other reasons why people cancel data renewals:

  • Better Control Over Spending: You decide when and how much to spend on data and can manage tight budgets more efficiently.
  • Flexibility to Choose Plans: It gives you the flexibility to switch between data plans based on current needs.
  • Opportunity to Reassess Network Quality: If service is poor, you can decide not to continue with that provider or plan.
  • Reduces Risk of Unauthorized Deductions: Cancelling auto-renewal minimizes cases of accidental airtime depletion for users who may not fully trust automatic systems or have had bad billing experiences.

All of that being mentioned. Let’s get to how to disable auto-renewal on your MTN data plans.

Method 1: How to Disable Auto-Renewal Using USSD

Step 1: Start by Dialling *312#

When you dial *312# on your mobile phone and press the call button, a menu pops up on your screen.

This is your gateway to all MTN data-related services, including buying new data plans, checking balances, and managing auto-renewals.

Step 2: Select ‘Data Plans’

Once the menu appears, you’ll see several numbered options such as see in the image below.

You should type “1” (for “Data Plans”) and press Send.

This takes you into MTN’s main data purchase and management menu, where you can explore all available bundles and special offers.

Step 3: Hit ‘Next’ (Press 99)

The initial menu may not show all available options at once.

To access the next page of options, you’ll need to type 99 and press Send.

This allows you to scroll forward to find more advanced or management-related features that aren’t visible on the first screen.

Step 4: Go to ‘Manage Data’

After pressing 99, a new list appears with additional options.

Look for ‘Manage Data’, which is usually listed as option 11 or 12 depending on your network menu at that time.

Select that number and press Send.

Step 5: Pick ‘Cancel Auto-Renewal’

Inside the ‘Manage Data’ menu, you’ll find an option like the ones in the image below:

Choose the option that says “Cancel Auto-Renewal” (usually option 3) and press Send.

This command tells the system that you no longer want your data bundle to automatically renew after it expires.

Step 6: Choose the Bundle You Want to Stop

If you have more than one active data bundle, for example, a weekly plan and a monthly plan — MTN will display them all.

You’ll then be asked to select the specific plan you wish to cancel auto-renewal for.

Type the corresponding number and press Send.

Once done, you’ll receive an on-screen confirmation (and possibly an SMS) saying your auto-renewal has been successfully cancelled.

After Cancelling the autorenewal, your current data bundle will continue working until it expires.

When it expires, it will not automatically renew unless you manually subscribe again. You can still manually renew or buy a new plan anytime through *312# or the MTN app.
