How to Replace the Spark Plug in Your Petrol Generator

Is your petrol generator struggling to start or running inefficiently?

The spark plug might be the culprit. The spark plug is a critical component that ignites the fuel-air mixture in the engine, making it essential for starting and running the generator smoothly. Regular inspection and maintenance of the spark plug can prevent engine misfires and other performance issues.

In this guide, we will walk you through the steps to inspect the spark plug, clean it, adjust the clearance, and replace it if necessary.

Things You Will Need:

• Spark Plug Wrench: For removing and installing the spark plug.
• Clean Rag or Brush: For cleaning the spark plug and surrounding area.
• Steel Brush: For cleaning carbon deposits from the spark plug.
• New Spark Plug: For replacement, if the old one is worn out.

Step 1: Turn Off the Generator

Before you start, make sure your generator is completely turned off and cooled down to avoid any accidental burns or injuries. Disconnect the generator from any power sources to ensure safety.

Step 2: Locate the Spark Plug

It should not be hard finding the spark plug. It is typically located on the side or top of the engine as seen in the image above.

Step 3: Remove the Spark Plug

You will need the spark plug wrench at this stage. Attach the wrench to the spark plug and turn it anti-clockwise to unscrew and remove the spark plug.

• Be gentle to avoid damaging the plug or threads.

Step 4: Clean the Spark Plug

After removing the spark plug, examine it for any signs of wear or damage, such as cracks or heavy carbon deposits. Use a steel brush to carefully clean any carbon deposits from the spark plug's electrodes. 

• Use a clean rag to wipe away any loose dirt or debris. Ensure the spark plug is dry and clean before reinserting.

Step 5: Check and Adjust the Spark Plug Gap

Measure the Gap between the electrodes and adjust if necessary. 

• To adjust, gently bend the side electrode to achieve the correct gap. A properly gapped spark plug ensures optimal engine performance.

Step 6: Reinstall or Replace the Spark Plug

If the spark plug is still in good condition after cleaning, reinstall it. Use the spark plug wrench to tighten it securely.

• Be careful  so you do not overtighten.

 If the spark plug is worn out or damaged, replace it with a new, genuine spark plug.

Step 7: Test the Generator

Reconnect any disconnected cables and start the generator. Check for smooth operation and any unusual sounds.

• Observe the generator's performance. If it starts and runs smoothly, the spark plug replacement was successful.
