If you’ve ever had to update your NIN details in Nigeria, you probably know how stressful it can be with the long queues, repeated visits to the enrollment center, and hours of waiting. Thankfully, the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has introduced a self-service modification portal that lets you update your NIN details online, without visiting an office.

In this guide, you’ll learn exactly how to update your NIN details from your phone or computer, the documents you’ll need, the cost for each update, and what changes can and cannot be done online.

What is the NIMC Self-Service Modification Portal?

The NIMC self-service portal is a secure online platform that allows registered Nigerians to modify certain information linked to their NIN.

This system was launched to make the process faster, safer, and more convenient by eliminating the need to visit an enrollment center for every update.

What NIN Details Can You Change Online?

Currently, the self-service portal supports updates to these NIN data fields:

1. Name: You can change your name if there’s an error, or if you’ve recently changed it due to marriage or other legal reasons. To do this, you’ll need to upload:

  • A valid court affidavit or government-issued ID showing your full name.
  • For marriage-related changes: a marriage certificate and a newspaper publication.

2. Date of Birth (DOB): Correcting your date of birth is only allowed once in your lifetime, whether online or at an enrolment center.

  • If you were born before 1992: you’ll need a Digitised NPC Attestation Certificate.
  • If you were born after 1992: you’ll need a Digitised NPC Birth Certificate.

Before requesting a DOB change, ensure you’ve completed the necessary attestation or registration on the NPC website. Payments for additional DOB change attempts after your one-time opportunity are non-refundable.

3. Address: You can update your residential address any number of times, either online or at a NIMC center. Required documents include:

  • A utility bill.
  • A tenancy agreement.
  • A bank statement.
  • A community leader’s attestation letter.

4. Phone Number: If you’ve lost your SIM card or changed your line, you can update your NIN-linked phone number. You’ll need a police report showing the phone number to be updated.

NIN Details You Cannot Change Online

Currently, change of state or origin is not available on the self-service portal. You’ll need to visit a NIMC enrolment center to request this update.
