How to Turn Off Snapchat’s Typing Notification

Snapchat automatically shows a “typing…” alert when you start writing in a chat. This feature  helps friends know you’re preparing a reply but the downside is that it can sometimes create pressure to respond instantly.

Officially, Snapchat doesn’t have a built-in option to turn off the notification when you are typing but there are simple tricks you can use to stay private while messaging.

This guide shows three effective methods you can use to hide the typing notification.

Method 1: Type While Offline

When you’re online and you are typing a reply, Snapchat instantly updates your friend with the typing notification.

The trick here is to go offline first before you start typing so that you can avoid sending that signal that’s sent to you friend.

First thing you need to do is open Snapchat, but don’t open the chat yet. Then turn on Airplane Mode or disable both Wi-Fi and mobile data.

After you network is disconnected, open the chat and type your message then close Snapchat completely (and make sure you swipe it away from recent apps).

Next, turn on your network to reeconnect to the internet and you can then reopen Snapchat and send your message.

Method 2: Use the Notes App

Snapchat only shows the typing alert when you enter text directly in its chat box which means you can draft  your message elsewhere ti keep it hidden before copying to Snapchat.

I’d suggest using the notes app on your phone to draft a message.

You can use any phone’s Notes app (Google Keep, Apple Notes, Samsung Notes, etc.).

Type your full message there at your own pace and copy the text when you are done.

Open Snapchat, go to the chat, and paste the text, then send it immediately to avoid the typing notification to linger for long.

Method 3: Clear the Chat Box Before Leaving

Snapchat's typing notification isn't only activated when you type; it can also remain active if any text is left in the chat box. Clearing the text before exiting resets the chat box and stops Snapchat from sending the alert.

Open the chat with the person you want to message.

Type your message as you usually would.

If you change your mind or want to pause before sending:

  • Select all the text in the message field.
  • Tap "Delete" or use "Backspace" until the field is empty.

When the box is clear, exit the chat or close Snapchat.
